How to convert a scanned PDF to an editable Word file
You open a PDF in Word and every page is one big picture. You cannot select a word, let alone change it. That happens because the PDF was made by a scanner or a phone camera: it holds photos of pages, not text.
First, check what kind of PDF you have
Open the PDF and try to select a sentence with your mouse or finger.
- If the text highlights, the PDF already contains real text. Use PDF to Word, which is free and keeps fonts, tables and pictures.
- If nothing highlights, or the whole page highlights as one block, the PDF is a scan. It needs OCR (optical character recognition), which reads the letters in the picture and turns them into text.
Convert a scanned PDF with OCR
- Open Scanned PDF to Word.
- Add your PDF and pick the language: English, Hindi, or both.
- Click Convert to Word and download the .docx file.
Scanned PDF to Word is a Premium tool. One document costs ₹5, paid once by UPI, card or net banking, and the page is read on your own device, so the file is not uploaded.
How to get cleaner results
- Scan straight. Tilted or curled pages give more mistakes. Fill the frame with the page when you take the photo. Scan to PDF then turns the photos into clean black-and-white A4 pages.
- Use good light. Shadows across the page are read as dirt or missing letters.
- Proofread numbers. OCR is very good with printed text, but always check amounts, dates and ID numbers before you send the file.
- Handwriting is much harder to read than print, so expect to retype parts of handwritten pages.
Only need the text, not a Word file?
To copy a paragraph from a photo or screenshot, Image to text gives you the text to copy or save. To keep the PDF but make its text searchable, use OCR PDF.
